I have never heard of Iida. I cant find it in Google, I dont even know how its pronounced.
I do know, though, that when we transferred the contents of Stanfords ("Explore, Discover, Inspire") Bristol shop to our back room table we found we had a book on Japan by rail. The book is full of information about the places we have all heard about like Tokyo, Hiroshima and Kyoto but hidden away on page 137 it says "Side trip to Iida" and "this is touted as the most scenic line in Japan." I cant find a Wikipedia entry for Iida either so clouded in anonymity it sounds like a great objective for the trip. "To travel the branch line to Iida" is what we are therefore setting out to do and this is the blog of our journey.
I dont know how this will go. Russia, which we have to cross, will be particularly difficult.
In nearly 60 years its always difficult to know how to answer the hairdresser when they ask "where are you going on your holidays" as I always manage to make it sound a bit boring. For once we have both been able to say "Japan" then, after suitable murmurs of appreciation and the appropriate pause, we have then added the killer punch "by train"
I have been to the hairdressers twice in the last month.
